Greenland has delivered a decisive message against Donald Trump’s past ambitions to acquire the island, overwhelmingly voting for parties that champion national sovereignty. The election results make it clear: Greenlanders want independence, not annexation.

A Resounding Rejection of U.S. Influence

The center-right Demokraatit party secured nearly 30% of the vote, gaining a strong mandate after consistently opposing Trump’s 2019 proposal to buy Greenland from Denmark. Naleraq, the most pro-independence party, followed with 25%, further demonstrating the island’s desire for self-rule.

Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede’s democratic socialist Inuit Ataqatigiit party came in third with 21% of the vote. Egede has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s vision for Greenland, labeling it an outdated colonial fantasy.

United for Independence

Despite political differences, all three leading parties share a common stance: Greenland should remain free from U.S. annexation. As a semiautonomous territory of Denmark, Greenland continues to push for greater self-governance, rejecting any notion of becoming part of the United States.

Trump’s attempt to acquire Greenland was widely mocked when it was first proposed, with Danish and Greenlandic leaders dismissing it outright.
