SARASOTA, FL — Aerosmith fans were treated to an unexpected reunion last week when the band’s iconic frontman Steven Tyler and lead guitarist Joe Perry were spotted together at a Florida market — months after the legendary group officially stepped away from the stage.
On Thursday, June 19, the pair made a casual lunchtime stop at Morton’s Gourmet Market in Sarasota, Florida, where stunned staff and customers quickly recognized the rock icons. Photos from the sighting, posted on Morton’s social media, show the two musicians still very much embodying their signature rockstar style despite their retirement from the road.
Tyler, 77, wore a sheer black shirt and paisley-patterned flared jeans — a nod to his flamboyant fashion sense that’s long been part of Aerosmith’s image. His long gray hair was tied up in a messy bun, and he was seen carrying a plastic shopping bag from the store. Perry, 74, kept things laid-back in a maroon linen shirt left unbuttoned over distressed denim.
“Never a dull moment at the market!” Morton’s captioned its Facebook post. “Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith dropped by for lunch. Awesome guys!”
A Rock Reunion in Retirement
While the meeting might have seemed spontaneous, it wasn’t entirely out of the blue. Perry reportedly owns a home nearby in Longboat Key, suggesting the reunion could’ve been a friendly catch-up between old bandmates — or perhaps even something more.
The appearance reignites curiosity about the future of Aerosmith, even after their decision to retire. For decades, Tyler and Perry — affectionately known by fans as the “Toxic Twins” — were the creative engine behind Aerosmith’s chart-topping hits and enduring legacy.
Aerosmith’s Final Bow
Aerosmith announced its retirement from touring on May 1, 2023, capping off more than five decades as one of rock’s most influential bands. The decision came after a series of health setbacks and logistical complications that had made consistent touring difficult in recent years.
In 2022, the group postponed tour dates after Tyler suffered a relapse following foot surgery, prompting him to re-enter a treatment program. “As many of you know, our beloved brother Steven has worked on his sobriety for many years,” the band wrote in a statement at the time.
Their farewell tour, announced under the banner “Peace Out,” was designed as a global celebration of Aerosmith’s enduring impact on music. However, the tour was marred by delays, with multiple September 2023 dates postponed due to ongoing health concerns.
In an interview reflecting on the band’s decision, Perry acknowledged the reality of aging and its toll on performing at the high level expected of Aerosmith. “I think it’s about time,” Perry said. “It’s kind of a chance to celebrate the 50 years we’ve been out here… You never know how much longer everybody’s going to be healthy to do this.”
An Enduring Legacy
Formed in Boston in 1970, Aerosmith sold over 150 million records worldwide, leaving an indelible mark on the rock genre. From the rebellious riffs of “Walk This Way” to the aching emotion of “Janie’s Got a Gun” and the sweeping anthem “Livin’ On the Edge,” the band’s music defined an era and crossed generational lines.
Their influence extended far beyond record sales and Grammy wins. Aerosmith helped bridge the gap between hard rock and mainstream pop, collaborating with acts like Run-D.M.C. and pushing creative boundaries with their energetic performances and music videos.
Even in retirement, the band’s cultural footprint remains strong. Their Las Vegas residency, which ran intermittently from 2019 to 2022, drew packed crowds and proved their staying power across decades.
Could More Be on the Horizon?
Though the recent reunion was framed as a casual lunch, it naturally stirred speculation among fans. Could this sighting signal the possibility of new collaborations, a surprise recording session, or even another limited engagement?
Given Tyler and Perry’s storied and sometimes volatile relationship, any moment of harmony between them is notable. Their friendship and creative partnership have weathered personal challenges, egos, and the pressures of fame — yet time and again, they’ve found their way back to each other.
For now, the Florida meet-up seems more nostalgic than strategic. But for fans still reeling from the end of an era, even a chance glimpse of Aerosmith’s leading men sharing a meal is enough to keep the dream alive.
As Perry once said, “You never know how much longer everybody’s going to be healthy to do this.” If last week’s sighting is any indication, perhaps the music still lingers — just waiting for the right moment to return.
