Victoria Beckham’s New Netflix Docuseries Reveals Her 20-Year Fight for Identity and Success

Through a new three-part documentary, Victoria Beckham opens up about her two-decade journey of self-discovery, resilience, and determination to become more than just a pop icon or a footballer’s wife. While critics’ reviews range from average to good, the series offers a rare, in-depth look at one of the most recognizable women in pop culture.Cú sốc của Victoria Beckham- Ảnh 1.

From Spice Girl to WAG — and the Fall That Followed

Released on October 9, Victoria Beckham is a three-part Netflix documentary directed by Nadia Hallgren, best known for Becoming, which profiled former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama.

As the title suggests, the series centers around Victoria herself — not her private life, but her transformation into a respected fashion designer. The storyline follows her preparations for her first-ever Paris Fashion Week show in September 2022, a major milestone after 14 turbulent years in the fashion industry.

Instead of telling her story chronologically, Hallgren intertwines past and present — juxtaposing memories of her early years with behind-the-scenes footage from the Paris show.

Victoria recalls growing up in a loving family yet often feeling out of place and misunderstood. Her big break came when she joined Spice Girls, which catapulted her to global fame. At the time, she was more famous — and wealthier — than her future husband, David Beckham.

But the pop glory didn’t last. When Spice Girls disbanded, Victoria was left adrift, remembered more as “David Beckham’s wife” than for her own achievements.

She attempted a solo music career, but ultimately accepted that singing and dancing weren’t her strongest suits. Soon after, she found herself absorbed into the world of WAGs (wives and girlfriends of footballers) — traveling with David, shopping excessively, and being mocked for her surgically enhanced appearance.

“I wasn’t creatively fulfilled,” Victoria admits in the film. “I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was lost — stuck in a moment that didn’t feel like me. I told myself that if I ever got another chance, I wouldn’t waste it.”

The Turning Point

Moving to Los Angeles in 2007, after David signed with LA Galaxy, became a fresh start. “Victoria Beckham has found her place,” tabloids wrote at the time, “in the land of ultra-thin bodies, bikinis, and Botox.”

A defining moment came when she modeled for Marc Jacobs — a campaign that made her realize she was being treated as a joke, not as a serious figure in fashion. That humiliation lit a fire in her: she decided to reinvent herself completely.

Without any formal fashion training, Victoria sought mentorship from designer Roland Mouret. Skepticism surrounded her — even Tom Ford and Donatella Versace doubted she could pull it off.

In response, Victoria had her breast implants removed, humbled herself, and immersed in learning the craft.

In 2008, while the Spice Girls briefly reunited for a world tour, Victoria realized she no longer belonged on stage. That same year, she launched her first fashion collection in New York — a modest line of 10 elegant dresses. Critics were pleasantly surprised by her sophistication and attention to detail.

Still, many assumed Roland Mouret was secretly behind the designs. Over time, Victoria proved them wrong, earning credibility as a serious designer.

However, despite her creative success, the Victoria Beckham brand suffered years of financial loss, with David repeatedly investing millions to keep it afloat. “We were losing millions,” she recalls tearfully. “I felt like I was falling apart.”

Even David admitted he saw no way out. Desperate to save her company, Victoria turned to David Belhassen, founder of Neo Investment Partners — who initially declined. But when his wife, a fan of Victoria’s designs, wore her pieces, he changed his mind and agreed to invest.

The series concludes with her Paris Fashion Week 2022 show, which succeeded despite last-minute chaos — rainstorms and model injuries.

Afterward, Victoria and David are seen walking through their Cotswolds estate, reflecting on two decades of challenges and growth. “I wanted to prove myself,” Victoria tells her husband. “Seeing your face and the kids backstage — that was the moment I knew you were proud.”Cú sốc của Victoria Beckham- Ảnh 3.

Mixed Reviews from Critics

Critics are divided. Some praised the series for offering an intimate, empowering portrait of Victoria Beckham’s evolution; others dismissed it as overly polished and dull.

Variety’s Aramide Tinubu described it as “a short yet compelling story about growth, acceptance, and resilience,” applauding its commentary on sexism in early-2000s media and how female celebrities were treated as public property.

Metro UK awarded the documentary 4.5 out of 5 stars, calling it “a vulnerable yet intelligent portrayal of Victoria Beckham — not a glossy PR stunt.” The review highlights her honesty about eating disorders, financial struggles, and being underestimated, adding that the film “reveals a woman deeply aware of her privilege, but equally determined to prove her worth.”

By contrast, The Telegraph’s Anita Singh gave it 2 out of 5 stars, saying the film “shines when Victoria reflects on her past with wit and self-awareness,” particularly her decision to remove breast implants — a symbolic move away from the shallow WAG image of 2006.

The Guardian’s Lucy Mangan rated it 3 out of 5, calling it “meticulously crafted yet monotonous.” She compared it to With Love, Meghan, suggesting it feels more like brand promotion than revelation.

The Financial Times echoed that view, labeling it “too polished to be provocative,” while The Independent criticized the “rags-to-riches” narrative as misleading, writing:

“This isn’t a story of struggle and triumph — it’s a story of privilege reinvented. A pop star married to a football legend, leveraging fame and fortune to build a luxury fashion empire.”

Despite the polarizing reviews, Victoria Beckham offers an undeniably fascinating look at a woman who refuses to be defined by her past — transforming from Posh Spice to one of fashion’s most enduring figures.
